Raleigh does not have a blanket overnight on-street parking ban, but restrictions apply in posted zones, downtown, and residential permit parking districts. Vehicles cannot be left parked on a public street for more than 72 continuous hours without being moved, and commercial vehicles over specified weights are restricted from residential streets overnight.
The City of Raleigh's parking rules are codified in the City Code, Part 11, Chapter 1 (Motor Vehicles and Traffic). There is no citywide ban on overnight parking on residential streets for passenger vehicles, but vehicles parked in the same location on a public street for more than 72 hours are considered abandoned under City Code and NC Gen Stat Β§20-137.7 and may be tagged and towed. Residential Permit Parking (RPP) districts throughout Raleigh, including areas near NC State University and downtown, restrict overnight parking to permit holders and their guests; posted signs indicate hours and permit requirements. Downtown metered zones and posted tow-away zones prohibit parking overnight without proper authorization. Commercial vehicles over 8,000 pounds, trailers, boats, and RVs are generally prohibited from being parked on residential streets overnight and from being stored in residential driveways for extended periods except under specific conditions. Enforcement is handled by Raleigh Police Parking Enforcement and the Parking Division. Winter weather or special events may trigger temporary parking bans on designated snow routes.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Raleigh code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
