Tuscaloosa Code Sec. 22-58 bars oversize vehicles (as defined by Code of Ala. Sec. 32-9-20) from operating on city streets during rush hours, and Sec. 22-89 makes it unlawful for any parked vehicle or load to extend more than 18 feet from the curb.
Oversized vehicles are regulated in Articles III and IV of Chapter 22. Section 22-58 makes it unlawful to transport or operate any oversize vehicleโas defined by Code of Ala. 1975, Sec. 32-9-20 et seq. and the regulations thereunderโon streets or highways within the city limits between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. and between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. (the morning and evening rush periods). Movement of houses is governed by separate ordinance provisions. For parked oversized vehicles, Section 22-89 makes it unlawful to park any vehicle on a street, or permit it to be parked, when any part of the vehicle, its load, or an attached trailer extends more than eighteen (18) feet from the curb. Section 22-79 also prohibits parking that leaves less than 15 feet of roadway width or that hinders traffic, which limits where a wide or long vehicle may legally stop. Heavy trucks (3+ axles, tractor-trailers) are additionally banned from residential districts under Sec. 22-92.
Operating an oversize vehicle during the prohibited rush-hour windows (Sec. 22-58) is punishable as provided in Sec. 1-8 of the City Code. Parking that extends more than 18 feet from the curb (Sec. 22-89) is a municipal offense and may lead to towing under Sec. 22-10 ($30.00 city removal, $5.00/day storage).
