Allentown restricts on-street parking of recreational and oversized vehicles - including buses, dual-wheel motor homes, oversized vehicles, school buses, tractor trailers, trailers, and truck campers - within residential and most non-industrial zoning districts (Chapter 660, Zoning) under Chapter 615, Part 3, Article XIV. The Allentown Parking Authority issues only short-term (24-hour, renewable) permits to load or unload a truck camper.
Under the Codified Ordinances Chapter 615, Part 3, Article XIV (Limitations on the Parking of Trucks and Trailers), it is unlawful to park or allow to remain parked on any street, or on any street abutting such a zone, a bus, dual-wheel motor home, oversized vehicle, school bus, tractor trailer, trailer, or truck camper within the zoning districts listed in Chapter 660 (Zoning), except for the I-2 Limited Industrial and I-3 General Industrial Districts. This effectively bars long-term on-street storage of RVs, campers, and boat trailers in residential neighborhoods. To accommodate loading and unloading, the Allentown Parking Authority issues a 24-hour permit for truck campers, with the option of a 24-hour renewal. The Allentown Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 660) separately defines a recreational vehicle to include a trailer, boat trailer, travel trailer, camping trailer, truck camper, camper shell, motor home, tent trailer, boat, or houseboat.
Parking a prohibited oversized or recreational vehicle on a residential street is a violation enforced by the Allentown Parking Authority and Police; vehicles are subject to ticketing, immobilization, and towing. A vehicle left in one place on any street continuously for over 72 hours is also deemed 'stored' and may be impounded as abandoned.
