Maple Grove's zoning code lets a residential property keep up to two licensed and operable recreational vehicles or pieces of recreational equipment (boats, snowmobiles, ATVs and their trailers) outside. On the street, the citywide 2 a.m.-6 a.m. ban and 4-hour limit still apply, and overnight RV use requires a police-issued exemption permit.
Maple Grove treats RVs, boats, campers and trailers mainly as a zoning and storage matter on private property and as a parking matter on the street. The city's zoning rules allow exterior storage in residential districts of up to two licensed and operable recreational vehicles or non-stationary pieces of recreational equipment, such as boats, snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles, plus any trailer used to transport them. Items must be licensed and operable to qualify for outdoor storage; most other materials must be kept inside a building. On public streets, recreational vehicles are subject to the same general parking rules as any vehicle: parking is prohibited on all city streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. year round, and no vehicle may park continuously for more than four hours. Because of the overnight ban, a guest's motor home cannot simply sit on the street overnight. The police department may issue a temporary parking exemption permit for a self-propelled recreational vehicle (fifth-wheel trailers, horse trailers, semi-trailers and other non-motorized trailers are excluded), generally limited to a maximum of two weeks per calendar year, with the permit displayed inside the vehicle and valid only within one block of the listed address. Parking an RV, boat or trailer on the street overnight (2 a.m.-6 a.m.) or beyond four hours without a permit can result in a citation and towing at the owner's expense. Storing more than two recreational vehicles outdoors, or keeping unlicensed/inoperable units in the open, is a zoning violation subject to code enforcement.
