South Gate, CA Parking Rules: RV & Boat Parking (2026)

On-street: California Vehicle Code §22651(k), enforced through South Gate Municipal Code Title 8 (Vehicles and Traffic), allows the South Gate Police Department to tow any vehicle — including an RV, motorhome, travel trailer, boat on a trailer, or utility trailer — that has remained parked in the same location on a public street or alley for more than 72 consecutive hours. Moving the vehicle a few feet or to the opposite curb does not reset the clock if a citation officer can show it never actually left the block. South Gate PD historically suspended 72-hour enforcement during the 2020 COVID emergency but the underlying rule remains in force. Chapter 8.12 separately governs parking adjacent to fire hydrants, in red zones, double parking, and parking that obstructs the passage of vehicles. On private property: Chapter 11.33 (Parking Standards) requires that all required residential parking spaces remain available for passenger vehicles. Chapter 11.25 (Residential Neighborhood Zones — NL Neighborhood Low and NM Neighborhood Medium) restricts use of the front yard setback to driveway access and landscaping, meaning a recreational vehicle parked across the front lawn (off the paved driveway) is a code-enforcement violation. RVs and boats stored on a paved area of the driveway, side yard, or rear yard are generally allowed for resident-owned vehicles, but cannot block required parking spaces, cannot be hooked up as a dwelling (Chapter 11.40 prohibits RV occupancy as a residence outside a permitted RV park), and cannot project over the sidewalk or public right-of-way. Sanitary connections (sewer hose, gray-water lines) to a parked RV are prohibited under Title 6 (Health and Sanitation). Commercial signs, 'for sale' postings on the RV/boat, and operating it as advertising are separately regulated under Chapter 8.14.
