Per Contra Costa County Ordinance Code Section 46-4.004 (Chapter 46-4, Miscellaneous Provisions, in Division 46 Traffic Regulations), any vehicle that is parked or left standing on a county road for seventy-two or more consecutive hours may be removed as provided in the California Vehicle Code. Enforcement typically involves a deputy chalking the tires and leaving a courtesy notice on the windshield; if the vehicle has not been moved when the officer returns at least 72 hours later, it may be towed. Abandoned vehicles on public streets, highways, and private roads should be reported to the Sheriff's Department; abandoned vehicles on private property fall under the county's Code Enforcement program and Division 430 (Abandoned Vehicles).
