Durham, NC Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 66-176(a) states that no person shall stand or park a vehicle in a roadway other than parallel with the edge of the roadway, headed in the direction of traffic, and with the curbside wheels of the vehicle within 12 inches of the edge of the roadway, except on streets marked for angle parking, where vehicles must sit at the signed angle. Under subsection (b), a vehicle too long for one marked space may occupy two, but only where the spaces are parallel to the roadway edge.

Section 66-175 separately requires at least ten feet of roadway width to stay open for moving traffic on any street, and the same ten-foot clearance applies inside alleys. Blocking a driveway is treated more severely: § 66-186(a) declares that stopping, standing, or parking a vehicle in front of a public or private driveway so as to block access to and from the street is a public nuisance. Subsection (b) lets police summarily abate that nuisance, dispatch towing apparatus, have the vehicle towed and stored, and bill the towing and storage cost to the offender as part of the cost of enforcing the Code, with no separate civil-penalty notice required first.
