Durham Code Section 66-187 prohibits vehicles more than 6.5 feet wide from parking on streets between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. CPRA zones impose additional permit requirements.
Durham Code of Ordinances Chapter 66, Section 66-187 restricts overnight street parking for oversized vehicles. Vehicles exceeding six and one-half feet in width cannot park on public streets between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Standard passenger vehicles are generally permitted to park on residential streets overnight unless posted otherwise. In Controlled Parking Residential Areas (CPRAs), additional restrictions apply. CPRA Areas A through E impose two-hour parking limits between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except by resident permit decal. CPRA Area F restricts parking between 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. seven days per week without a permit. Residents in CPRA zones must obtain a parking permit from Durham Parking Services to park on their street beyond the posted time limits. There is no citywide ban on overnight parking for standard-size vehicles outside of CPRA zones and posted restrictions. Contact Durham Parking Services or Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200 for permit information and parking questions.
Vehicles parked in violation of CPRA restrictions or the oversized vehicle overnight ban may receive parking citations. Repeated violations may result in the vehicle being towed at the owner's expense. CPRA citations carry fines as established by the Durham parking enforcement schedule.
