Durham UDO Section 10.2 requires boats, camper trailers, and RVs to be stored off-street behind the primary structure or on a driveway at least 25 feet from the right-of-way.
Under the Durham Unified Development Ordinance Section 10.2, recreational vehicles, boats on trailers, and camper trailers must be parked off-street on residential property. They must be positioned behind the primary structure or stored on an improved driveway surface at least 25 feet back from the public right-of-way. Grass, landscaped areas, and bare earth are prohibited as parking surfaces for any vehicle including RVs and boats. Vehicles stored on residential property cannot exceed 35 feet in overall length, 8 feet in width, or 12 feet in height. Multifamily developments may designate specific areas for boat and trailer parking as part of their site plans. Durham Code Chapter 66, Section 66-187 also prohibits parking of vehicles more than six and one-half feet in width on public streets between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., effectively barring most RVs from overnight street parking. Violations are enforced through the Neighborhood Improvement Services division and may result in civil citations. Contact Durham One Call at (919) 560-1200 to report violations or ask about storage options.
Violations of UDO parking surface and storage requirements are enforced through the Neighborhood Improvement Services division. Property owners receive a notice of violation with a compliance deadline. Failure to comply may result in civil penalties as authorized under Durham Code Chapter 1, Section 1-9.
