Charleston bans smoking in city parks, playgrounds, beaches, public buildings, and within 25 feet of building entrances under Chapter 30 and the Charleston Clean Indoor Air ordinance.
Charleston enacted the Clean Indoor Air Ordinance in 2007 prohibiting smoking in enclosed public places, restaurants, bars, and workplaces. Chapter 30 (Parks and Recreation) extends the ban to all city parks, playgrounds, public golf courses, and the White Point Garden (Battery), and the Folly Beach municipality has a separate beach ban. Smoking is prohibited within 25 feet of public-building entrances. The ordinance covers cigarettes, cigars, vapes, and e-cigarettes following 2018 amendments. South Carolina Β§44-95 (Clean Indoor Air Act) sets the statewide baseline.
Smoking in restricted areas is a civil infraction with fines up to $50 first offense, $100 second offense; business owners may face additional penalties for failing to post signage.
