Greenville, NC Public Conduct: Public Alcohol Use (2026)

Section 12-1-2 of the Greenville City Code makes it unlawful to possess or consume an open container of unfortified wine or malt beverage on a public street (unless the person is an occupant of a motor vehicle) or on any property owned, occupied or controlled by the city, including sidewalks, alleys, buildings, parcels, lots, parks and parking lots. 'Open container' is defined as any container whose seal has been broken or one other than the manufacturer's unopened original container. This section targets malt beverages, such as beer and ale, and unfortified wine specifically.

S. S. 1, mapped in Exhibit A to Ordinance No. 23-014 and on file at the City Clerk's office. Inside that district, all sidewalks, marked and unmarked crosswalks are included, but streets and parking lots are specifically excluded. , subject to the Social District Management and Maintenance Plan, and the City Manager may suspend the district at any time to protect public health and safety. Enforcement runs through the Greenville Police Department. A first violation of the possession or consumption ban draws a civil citation of $100; a second violation within 365 days rises to $250, and a third or later violation within that window costs $500.
