Bergenfield, NJ Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 223-2(A)(10), part of the Parks and Playgrounds chapter as amended August 20, 2008 by Ordinance No. 08-2407, groups skateboards with minibikes, snowmobiles, bicycles and roller blades in a single sentence prohibiting their operation in any park or playground, the recreation areas defined in § 223-1, including Memorial Park, Whittaker Field and the Borough's eleven listed playgrounds. The same subsection restricts motor vehicles to areas designated for parking, bars driving in any area restricted against vehicle operation, and caps vehicle speed at 10 mph where operation is otherwise allowed.

Read together, the section treats a skateboard the same way it treats a minibike: as a wheeled device that is simply not permitted on park or playground grounds, regardless of whether it is ridden on a path, a court surface or a picnic area. The chapter does not separately regulate skateboarding on Borough sidewalks, streets or in commercial districts outside park property; that activity falls instead under the Borough's general traffic and pedestrian rules in Chapter 299, Vehicles and Traffic, which this chapter does not incorporate.

Violations of § 223-2 are enforced under the Borough's general penalty provision in Chapter 1, Article II, the same mechanism that applies to every other prohibited park use, from open fires to unleashed animals.
