Medina, OH Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Medina Codified Ordinances Section 373.09, enacted by Ordinance 53-87 on June 8, 1987, prohibits riding or operating a bicycle, skateboard, moped, motorized vehicle, motorcycle or any other toy vehicle on any public sidewalk within a one-block radius of the Medina City Square, the city's historic nineteenth-century town square and the commercial hub of downtown. The restriction applies specifically to sidewalks; it does not by its terms reach the streets or the square's park grounds themselves, and it is written broadly enough to cover not just bicycles and skateboards but any wheeled toy vehicle ridden on those sidewalks.

The section sits in Chapter 373, Bicycles and Motorcycles, rather than in a separate skateboard ordinance, and it is the only sidewalk-riding restriction in that chapter tied to a specific location rather than a citywide rule; the chapter's other sidewalk-adjacent provisions, such as Section 373.10 on bicycle parking, apply city-wide instead of to one district.

Enforcement escalates with repeat conduct in the same pattern used elsewhere in the Traffic Code. A first violation is a minor misdemeanor, carrying no jail time and a fine of up to $150 under the general penalty section, 303.99. A second offense within one year of the first becomes a misdemeanor of the fourth degree, punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $250 fine, and every further offense within that year is a misdemeanor of the third degree, carrying up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. Medina Police enforce the restriction on foot and bicycle patrol in the downtown square area, where merchants and pedestrian traffic are concentrated.
