Ridgefield, CT Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Section 128-1(B), amended 9-17-2025, singles out reckless riding rather than the activity itself: it prohibits roller-skating, street skating, in-line skating, and operating or riding a skateboard, e-bike or e-scooter in any public area of the Town in a manner that disregards the safety of others using the same sidewalk or public area. That means ordinary, careful skateboarding on a public sidewalk isn't itself illegal under this section; what triggers a citation is the reckless manner of the riding. A related but separate rule sits in the Parks and Recreation chapter: § 269-9(C)(2) bars riding a bicycle, skateboard or other nonmotorized vehicle in any park area where the Parks and Recreation Commission has posted riding as prohibited, giving the Commission its own tool to close specific park zones to skateboards regardless of how carefully they're ridden.

Together the two chapters give Ridgefield two separate levers: a town-wide behavior standard focused on recklessness under § 128-1(B), and a park-specific area restriction under § 269-9(C)(2) that the Commission can apply to particular paths, courts or fields. Enforcement of the town-wide reckless-riding rule runs through § 128-1(C), which sets a base fine of $250 per offense, adjustable by the Board of Selectpersons up to the maximum fine state statute allows.
