Ridgewood, NJ Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

Chapter 241, Skateboards, Scooters, and Micromobility Vehicle or Devices in the Central Business District, was adopted April 9, 2025 by Ordinance No. 4044 and expressly supersedes the Village's 1989 skateboard ordinance. Section 241-2(A) prohibits any person from using, operating, or riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter, micromobility device or vehicle, including electric or motorized skateboards, electric personal assistive mobility devices, low-speed electric scooters and bicycles, and motorized bicycles, on any public sidewalk or other public property, or on private property to which the public is invited such as sidewalks, driveways, and parking lot entrances and exits.

Subsection B carves out wheelchairs, motorized wheelchairs, and four-wheel assistive mobility scooters from the ban entirely. Subsection C confines the whole prohibition to the Central Business District, defined by the specific properties listed in Schedule A, an attachment to the chapter; ride the same skateboard outside that mapped commercial core and Chapter 241 does not reach it. The chapter carries its own definitions section, Section 241-1, spelling out what counts as a skateboard, scooter, or micromobility device so enforcement is not left to guesswork about borderline equipment like e-boards or self-balancing devices.
