Taunton, MA Public Conduct: Skateboarding Rules (2026)

City Code § 405-109, added September 21, 2004, states flatly that no person shall ride and/or operate skateboards or scooters, mechanical or otherwise, in the Municipal Parking Garage in the City of Taunton, and the ordinance is written to override any other conflicting ordinance on the subject. The ban is limited to the garage structure itself; it does not by its terms extend to city sidewalks or streets generally, which are instead governed by the separate scooter statute at § 405-110 covering gas-powered scooters, powerboards and mini-motorbikes. Because § 405-109 uses the phrase "mechanical or otherwise," it reaches both muscle-powered skateboards and any type of scooter, including non-gas-powered models, when ridden inside the garage. The section sits within Chapter 405, Article VI (Rules of the Road for Pedestrians and Bicyclists), and enforcement falls to the Taunton Police Department, which is responsible for enforcing the vehicle and traffic provisions of Chapter 405 generally.
