McHenry County has no short-term-rental-specific noise rule; guest noise is handled under the general noise nuisance rules by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office, which the county says fields most STR noise complaints after normal business hours.
The county's staff report identifies noise as one of the two primary short-term rental complaints and states that noise complaints "have typically been handled by the McHenry County Sheriff's Office since the noise nuisances usually occur outside of the business hours" of the planning department. There is no separate decibel or quiet-hours rule aimed only at vacation rentals; operators must comply with the applicable county or municipal noise ordinance. Cities such as Crystal Lake and Woodstock enforce their own noise ordinances against rental guests, and Illinois Pollution Control Board limits (35 Ill. Adm. Code 900) provide numeric backstops.
Excessive guest noise is enforced as a noise nuisance by the Sheriff's Office in unincorporated areas or by municipal police in cities, with citations and possible impact on the rental permit.
