Short-term rental permit rules in Gardena, CA — also called Airbnb permits, vacation rental licenses, or STR registration — list the application steps, fees, and operating requirements for hosting.
Gardena bans whole-home short-term rentals and allows only home-sharing under Municipal Code Chapter 5.76 (Ordinance 1854, adopted September 12, 2023). A host must hold a valid Home-Sharing Rental Permit before renting any bedroom for 30 consecutive days or less. The city caps permits at 100 per five-year period.
Gardena Municipal Code Chapter 5.76 governs short-term rentals. Section 5.76.010 makes it unlawful to operate or advertise home sharing without a permit. "Home sharing" means renting bedrooms, for 30 consecutive days or less, in a dwelling that is the host's primary residence while the host lives on site throughout the stay. Renting an entire dwelling short-term is prohibited. The city issues at most 100 permits per five-year period; applications are accepted January 1 through February 15, awarded by lottery if more than 100 qualify, otherwise first-come, first-served. The permit fee is $1,337. Applicants must also obtain a business license and TOT certificate, and the property must be an R-1 or R-2 zone with no ADU or junior ADU.
Operating or advertising a short-term rental without a valid Home-Sharing Permit violates Chapter 5.76 and may result in permit denial, revocation, or a permanent ban.
