El Cajon imposes a 10% Transient Occupancy Tax on all rentals to transient guests for 30 consecutive days or less. This applies to hotels, motels, and short-term rental properties including those listed on Airbnb, VRBO, and similar platforms. Hosts must collect the TOT from guests and remit it to the city quarterly. A Transient Occupancy Tax certificate must be obtained and maintained in current compliance as a prerequisite for the STR permit. TOT is calculated on the total rent charged. Major platforms may auto-collect TOT depending on their agreements with the city. Hosts with direct bookings must calculate and remit TOT themselves.
Failure to collect or remit TOT results in penalties and interest. Delinquent TOT status may block STR permit approval or renewal.
