McCracken County, KY Sign Regulations: Digital Billboards (2026)

Zoning code § 150.039(B)(5) requires changeable and electronic signs to display each message for a minimum of eight seconds with changeovers taking no more than two seconds. Subsection (B)(6) requires a light-sensing device with automatic dimming so the maximum luminescence never exceeds three-tenths foot-candles over ambient light, measured at a distance keyed to sign face size: 150 feet for signs of 300 square feet or smaller, 200 feet for signs larger than 300 up to 378 square feet, 250 feet for signs larger than 378 up to 672 square feet, and 350 feet for signs larger than 672 square feet up to the 1,000-square-foot maximum sign face size.

Digital signage itself is only permitted by zoning district under the § 150.039(D) table: it is allowed in Commercial (C), Light Industry (ML), and Heavy Industry (MH) zones, but is expressly barred in AG, RR, and UR districts. The Commercial zone table entry additionally allows one sign per 300 feet of road frontage and permits stacked or V-shaped faces, unlike every other district, which caps digital and standard signage at one sign per parcel. Any sign that cannot meet the district table's size or height limits requires a variance from the Board of Adjustment under § 150.039(D).
