Ashwaubenon, WI Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Ashwaubenon's Business Sign Zoning Map designates a Freeway Commercial category for parcels along I-41 and similar freeway frontage, and § 17-6-200(J)(1) caps those parcels at two freestanding signs total: one freeway-facing sign and one street-face sign, plus permitted wall signage. The freeway-facing sign may be a pylon, ground-mount or monument sign, and under the current standard it cannot exceed 45 feet in height, measured from finished grade at the sign's base, or 200 square feet of face area. A grandfather clause protects freeway pylon, ground-mount or monument signs that existed as of August 16, 2002: those may reach 60 feet in height and 450 square feet, or whatever height and square footage the Village's 2002 pylon/ground-mount sign inventory recorded for that specific sign.

The street-face sign, which fronts the business's street or primary entrance rather than the freeway, is limited to one ground-mount or monument sign no taller than 10 feet with a face no larger than 120 square feet. Corner parcels are not limited to a single freestanding sign structure the way interior parcels are: § 17-6-200(J)(1) lets a corner parcel install two double-face freestanding signs, one per street frontage, or a single multi-face sign instead. Wall signage in the Freeway Commercial district is sized to the building: a wall over 20,000 square feet of footprint may carry signage up to 10 percent of that elevation's wall face, while a smaller building may use up to 20 percent, and no more than two wall-sign faces are allowed per § 17-6-200(I)(3)(a)(ii).
