Carlsbad, CA Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Carlsbad Municipal Code Chapter 21.41 sets a general 6-foot height cap on freestanding signs citywide, but § 21.208.100(B) carves out an explicit exception for freeway-oriented commercial signage in the Commercial/Visitor-Serving Overlay Zone: "No freestanding sign shall exceed six feet in height, except for freeway service facility signs; and freestanding multi-tenant directory signs for shopping centers and/or mixed use commercial/visitor-serving projects, which shall not exceed ten feet in height, pursuant to a City Council approved sign program." Freeway service facility center sign programs, required as part of the conditional use permit for any project proposing freeway service facility uses, are capped at 100 square feet of freestanding sign area for sites of eight acres or less, or 150 square feet for larger sites, plus wall signage up to one square foot per lineal foot of building frontage. Every freestanding sign in the overlay zone, including qualified freeway service signs, must be paired with a landscaped base at least 80 square feet in area featuring bird-of-paradise plants and a Phoenix roebelenii palm, screened so the sign's structural base is not left visible.

Separately, the citywide sign standards table in § 21.41.095 governs gas and service stations wherever located: a pole sign is allowed "Only permitted at freeway service stations," limited to one per site, 50 square feet, and up to 35 feet above average grade (versus 24 inches for the equivalent monument sign at a non-freeway station). No internally illuminated thru-face channel letter sign may face a residentially zoned property, and all overlay-zone signage must be reviewed and approved through the conditional use permit process rather than issued over the counter.
