Taylor, MI Sign Regulations: Freeway-Facing Signs (2026)

Section 18.06(b)(2) of the Taylor Zoning Ordinance restricts billboards to lots that face I-94, the freeway that runs through the city's east side near Detroit Metro Airport. Billboards are limited to the I-1 and I-2 industrial districts, capped at 300 square feet per face with a maximum of two faces, and must sit back at least 50 feet from the street right-of-way. Height follows the standard for buildings in the district, except a board rises to 45 feet where it sits adjacent to the interstate, and the bottom of the sign must clear at least 15 feet from the ground if it is within 4 feet of a surface serving automobiles.

Spacing is strictly controlled: billboards must sit at least 1,000 lineal feet apart along freeways and streets with a right-of-way of 120 feet or more, measured on either side of the street. A billboard cannot be placed within 200 feet of a park, playground, school, church, or residential district or use, and the applicant must obtain all state permits and go through planning commission site plan review under Article 19 before construction, per Table 19.02.
