Taylor, MI Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Table 18.06.a of the Taylor Zoning Ordinance lists garage sale or open house signs as permitted in all zoning districts, but unlike most temporary signs they require a sign permit from the Development Services Department. The maximum height is 3 feet and the maximum display area is 6 square feet. A resident may post one sign per street frontage on the sale site itself, plus up to two additional off-premises signs directing traffic, provided written permission is obtained from the owner or occupant of any property where an off-premises sign is placed.

Timing is fixed: signs cannot go up more than 3 business days before the event and must be removed within 1 business day after it ends. Because Section 18.05 applies to all permitted signs in the city, garage sale signs must also sit back at least 10 feet from any public street right-of-way and cannot block the Section 14.03 corner clearance (clear vision triangle) at intersections and driveways. Permit fees are set by city council resolution under Section 18.09(c), and the Development Services Department can order removal of any sign left up past its display window under its inspection authority in Section 18.08.
