Bayonne, NJ Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Bayonne City Code Sec 4-6.4, Advertising, part of the private-sale chapter adopted January 22, 2025 by Ord. No. O-25-08, governs signage for any private sale or private auction permitted under Sec 4-6.2, which includes garage, yard, attic, and rummage sales. Subsection a limits the display to no more than two signs advertising the sale. Subsection b caps the size of any permitted sign at two feet by three feet. Subsection c prohibits erecting any sign before the sale or auction actually begins and requires immediate removal once the permit issued under Sec 4-6.2 expires.

Because signage is tied to the underlying sale permit, a resident who has not obtained the license required by Sec 4-6.2 has no lawful basis to post a garage-sale sign at all. The advertising rule applies City-wide regardless of the zoning district and is enforced alongside the rest of Chapter 4's private-sale licensing scheme, including the general penalty in Sec 4-6.7 of up to $1,250 for violations of the section, with each day of noncompliance treated as a separate offense.
