Bayonne, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Bayonne's commercial sign schedule at § 35-25.4 lists business signs as a subcategory of signs 'not exceeding 20% of the sign facade area,' and within that schedule subsection c.6 sets a separate, more specific rule for glass: 'Window signs, not exceeding 30% of the window area to which the sign is affixed.' The rule sits alongside five other business-sign types in the same subsection, including wall signs capped at three square feet per linear foot of frontage and projecting signs limited to a 12-inch projection, so a retailer combining a window display with a wall sign must keep each type within its own limit.

The 30% cap applies per window, not per storefront, so a business with several display windows must measure coverage window by window rather than averaging across the whole facade. Temporary window placards used for a sale or promotion are governed separately: § 35-25.4.b allows temporary event signs, including window placards, for up to 30 days and caps them at two per location, a distinct rule from the permanent 30%-of-window standard in subsection c.6. Every window sign still needs a zoning permit through the Zoning Officer under § 35-31.3, and the sign must be maintained in a clean, undamaged condition under § 35-25.6 or it can be ordered repaired or removed.
