Garage-sale signs qualify as temporary signs under Hawai'i County's Sign Code (HCC Ch. 3). They are allowed in all districts without a permit but must relate to a special event or condition of the property and, in residential/agricultural areas, may not exceed eight square feet.
A garage-sale sign is a 'temporary, unlighted sign or banner' that must relate to a meeting, special event or condition of the property and cannot be a permanent form of advertising. Under the County Sign Code, such temporary signs may not exceed eight square feet in Residential, Open or Agricultural districts, or thirty-two square feet in Commercial districts, and a small unlighted sign is capped at two square feet. No permit is required for temporary signs. Signs should be placed on the seller's own property; posting on utility poles, street signs or in the public right-of-way is prohibited and the County may remove them. Remove signs promptly after the sale.
Signs placed in the right-of-way or on public property may be removed by the County; repeated or oversized signage is a sign-code violation enforced by Public Works.
