Florence County, SC Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Sec. 30-204 opens with a blanket rule: 'No sign shall be allowed in the public right-of-way, except for the following,' then lists eight narrow exceptions, from public agency signs to bus stop signs to church signs allowed under state law. Item (8) covers yard-sale style signage: 'Directional signs of a temporary nature not to exceed three square feet in area and 24 hours in duration for such events as yard sales, auctions, public gatherings, etc.; provided they are located no closer than 500 feet apart.'

That means a garage-sale sign staked in the right-of-way, rather than on the seller's own property, has to satisfy three conditions simultaneously: it cannot exceed three square feet, it cannot stay up more than 24 hours, and no two such signs can sit closer than 500 feet apart along the route. A sign on private property is instead governed by the county's general sign rules under Table VII and Sec. 30-205's temporary sign standards, which are separate from this right-of-way exception.
