Lynchburg, VA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Lynchburg folds its yard-sale sign rule into the same land-use definition that limits how often a resident can hold a sale. Article XI, Sec. 2-113, item 361 ("Yard Sale"), permits one sign not exceeding three square feet in area and requires that it be promptly removed at end of each sale day, which means a sign left up overnight after the sale closes is itself a violation even if the sale is otherwise compliant. The same item flatly bars signs advertising a sale from street right-of-ways, so a resident cannot post directional or advertising signage on the road shoulder, median, or utility pole in front of or near the property, only on the premises where the sale is being held.

That right-of-way ban matters for enforcement: Sec. 4(f) of the Zoning Ordinance specifically excludes the posting of signs on public property or public rights-of-way from the civil-penalty schedule that applies to most zoning violations, which means a right-of-way sign violation is pursued as a criminal matter under Sec. 2 rather than through the $200/$350/$500 civil ticket process used for other yard-sale infractions. The Zoning Administrator, housed in the Department of Community Development, is the official charged with enforcing both the size limit and the right-of-way ban, and can issue a written notice of violation before any criminal referral.
