Lynnwood, WA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Lynnwood Municipal Code Section 8.40.0810(A)(3) is the specific rule for household-goods sale signs, the category that covers garage and yard sales. The sign cannot exceed four square feet in area per side, and it must be attached to a wall or mounted in the ground on the site where the sale itself takes place, not on a neighbor's lawn or a vacant lot down the block. Timing is tightly controlled: the sign can go up no more than one day before the sale and has to come down within one day after it ends, so a garage-sale sign posted a week early or left standing for months afterward is out of compliance the moment it exceeds either window.

The section also restricts what the sign can advertise. It can be used only for the sale of household goods, and it cannot double as a home occupation sign or serve any other residential or commercial purpose, which keeps a homeowner from using a garage-sale placard as a permanent business advertisement. Lynnwood separately allows portable off-premises directional signs for a sale under Section 8.40.0810(A)(8), capped at four square feet per side as well, provided they stay off city park property, are not fastened to a utility pole, tree or traffic control device, and do not overhang the street, sidewalk or a public right-of-way where people walk, bike or drive.
