Garage sale signs are permitted on private property with owner permission. Signs in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, and on traffic signs are prohibited. Remove signs within 24 hours of the sale ending.
Under MGO Chapter 31, temporary garage sale and event signs are treated the same as other temporary noncommercial signs in a content-neutral framework. Residents may post directional or advertising signs on their own property, and on other private property with the owner's consent, within size limits (typically 6 square feet). Signs placed in the terrace or public right-of-way, stapled to utility poles, attached to street trees, or affixed to City signs or traffic signs are prohibited and may be removed by Streets Division staff without notice. Signs should be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends to avoid litter citations. Signs obstructing the vision triangle at intersections create safety hazards and are also prohibited.
Signs in the right-of-way are removed by City crews. Repeated or egregious sign litter may result in MGO Chapter 31 citations.
