Sun Prairie, WI Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

36 of the Sun Prairie Code of Ordinances, the same chapter that limits how often a household may hold a garage sale, also regulates the signs advertising it. 030(A) sets a hard size cap: a garage sale sign cannot exceed six square feet in area and cannot have more than two faces. The sign must identify the location of the sale, so a generic sign with no address does not meet the requirement, and it must be placed off the city right-of-way, meaning it cannot sit in the street terrace or boulevard along a public road.

Subsection B adds placement restrictions beyond the right-of-way: signs cannot be attached to utility poles or traffic control devices, and they cannot be posted on someone else's property, or on the right-of-way adjoining someone else's property, without that owner's explicit permission. Subsection C controls timing: a sign cannot go up earlier than one day before the sale begins, and it must come down no later than one day after the sale ends, so a seller running a Saturday sale can post the sign Friday and must remove it by Sunday. 36's garage-sale licensing scheme rather than the general sign standards found elsewhere in the zoning title.
