Unincorporated San Joaquin County allows temporary garage sale signs up to 4 square feet on the sale property and a limited number of directional signs, but prohibits attaching signs to utility poles, traffic signs, or placing them in the public right-of-way. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Stockton, Lodi, and Manteca apply similar rules through their sign codes.
San Joaquin County Development Title §9-1040 and the corresponding sign chapters in Stockton Municipal Code §16.60, Lodi Municipal Code §17.49, and Manteca Municipal Code §17.58 permit temporary garage/yard sale signs with these standard conditions: on-site signs up to 4 to 6 square feet, up to 3 to 4 off-premises directional signs, posted no more than 48 hours before the sale, and removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Attaching signs to utility poles, street-name signs, traffic signal poles, or trees in the right-of-way is prohibited and signs are subject to summary removal by Public Works. Signs may not obstruct driver sight triangles at intersections or driveways. Most county residents use 18x24-inch wire-frame yard signs placed on private property with permission of the owner. Garage sales themselves are generally allowed without a permit in the unincorporated county, though Stockton limits residents to 2 to 3 sales per year under Stockton Municipal Code §5.40 and requires each sale to be advertised only during the sale window. PG&E and telecommunications companies may also remove signs stapled to their poles under tariff rules.
