Full Breakdown

UDO § 18.50.190(O)(2)(a)(2) treats garage sale signs, a category defined to include sample and yard sale signs, as a type of temporary sign in the AG, R-1, and R-2 districts. Each sign is capped at four square feet with a maximum of two faces, and it may only be placed at the site of the actual sale rather than posted around the neighborhood as directional signage. No permit is required for these signs, but the chapter's general temporary-sign rules still apply, including bans on illumination and on blocking sidewalks, driveways, or intersection sight lines.

Violations & Fines

A garage sale sign that's oversized or posted somewhere other than the sale site falls outside the UDO's no-permit exemption, and the City can remove it under the ordinance's temporary-sign and enforcement provisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can a garage sale sign be in Olathe?
Up to four square feet per sign face, with a maximum of two faces, under UDO § 18.50.190(O)(2)(a)(2), and no sign permit is needed.
Can I put up garage sale signs pointing to my sale from other streets?
The UDO exemption only covers signs placed at the site of the sale itself; signs directing people from elsewhere are addressed separately under the Municipal Code's right-of-way sign rules at § 12.10.
