Pomona, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

An occasional sale, Pomona's term for a yard, patio, lot or garage sale, may be advertised with no more than two signs, and neither can exceed six square feet in area; both must be unlighted (Section 30-754(a)). Placement is tightly restricted: signs cannot go on telephone poles, streetlights, traffic signs, sidewalks or any other structure sitting in the public right-of-way. They belong on private property only, which as a practical matter means the seller needs permission to post a sign anywhere other than their own yard (Section 30-754(b)).

Timing is tied directly to the sale itself under Section 30-753: a sign can only be displayed during the period of the sale set by that section's schedule, so signs cannot go up early to advertise a future weekend or stay up after the sale weekend passes (Section 30-754(c)). Any sign that breaks these rules, oversized, lit, posted in the right-of-way, or left up outside the sale window, is declared a nuisance under subsection (d), and the code/zoning manager can order it abated immediately rather than going through a standard code-enforcement notice-and-hearing process.

Because the sign rule sits inside Article XII alongside the definitions and scheduling sections, a sign violation for an unauthorized occasional sale, one held outside the council-adopted dates, can be cited alongside the underlying scheduling violation.
