Springfield, OR Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 7.266 of the Springfield Municipal Code, in Article XIV governing garage sales, limits advertising to a single sign posted on the premises from which the sale is held; the code does not separately address off-site directional signs, so Springfield's garage sale rule is a one-sign-per-property limit rather than a citywide posting scheme. The sign rule connects directly to what counts as a licensed garage sale in the first place: § 7.260 exempts the sale of one item, displayed publicly with a sign showing the item and its price, from the licensing article altogether, and it likewise exempts selling more than one individual item when it is not on public display and no sign is posted advertising the sale or its location.

Once a seller posts a sign to advertise more than a single displayed item, or otherwise publicly advertises the sale, the transaction becomes a 'garage sale' under § 7.260 and requires the § 7.262 license and the § 7.264 10-day permit, capped at two per calendar year per person or address. In practice, the sign itself is what separates an informal single-item yard sale from a licensed garage sale event, so a seller who wants to avoid the permit process must either forgo a sign or limit the sale to a single publicly displayed item. Fees for the license that accompanies a signed, advertised sale are set by council resolution under § 7.268.
