Upper Darby, PA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Yard sale and garage sale signs are one of 14 categories of signs the township lets residents put up without first obtaining a sign permit, listed under § 550-37F, Signs for which a permit is not required. Item (11) of that list is specific to sale signs: it caps the sign at two square feet, roughly the size of a large poster, and requires the sign come down within 24 hours of the sale's end. Because the sign is exempt from the permit process, a resident does not file paperwork with the Department of Licenses & Inspections before putting one out, but the sign still must comply with § 550-35, Applicability and intent, and § 550-37A's rules for computing sign area and height.

Enforcement runs through the Zoning Officer, who administers Chapter 550 under § 550-53A, and a sign left up past the 24-hour window becomes a zoning violation subject to the chapter's general civil-penalty provision. Homeowners who want a garage sale sign larger than two square feet, or one posted for more than a day after the sale, need to either shrink it to fit the exemption or apply for a standard sign permit under § 550-37G instead.
