Walla Walla County, WA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

WWCC § 17.28.020 sets the general rule for any temporary-event sign, garage and yard sale signage included: 'Signage for temporary events is allowed for a period not to exceed three days unless documentation is provided that the temporary event exceeds three days,' and even with documentation, 'In no case shall temporary signage be allowed for a period exceeding thirty days annually.' That annual cap is cumulative, so someone who runs several sales in a year cannot stack multiple three-day postings past thirty total days. The county's general prohibited-signs list in § 17.28.090.A still applies to these temporary signs: they cannot be 'attached to utility, street light, and traffic control standard poles,' cannot be 'attached to trees or rocks,' and cannot be placed 'on public property without prior approval,' which covers county road rights-of-way where garage-sale signs are commonly staked.

They also cannot resemble or obstruct an official traffic sign or signal. Because sign regulation sits in Title 17 (Zoning), enforcement runs through WWCC Chapter 14.13: the community development director can issue a notice of violation and order, and uncorrected noncompliance carries a $250-per-day civil penalty, with a gross misdemeanor, up to 90 days in jail or a $1,000 fine, for willful refusal to correct.
