Amarillo Code Chapter 4-2 (Signs) exempts seasonal and holiday decorations at residential properties from sign permit requirements. Displays such as Christmas lights, wreaths, and festive ornaments may be erected without a permit provided they are temporary and do not constitute a permanent commercial sign.
Under Amarillo Code Chapter 4-2 (Signs), a permit is required for most permanent and many temporary signs, but Section 4-2-17 (Exempt Signs) carves out decorations customarily associated with national, local, or religious holidays. Residential holiday displays β including string lights, inflatables, wreaths, and non-commercial banners β do not require a sign permit as long as they are temporary in nature and do not advertise a business or service. No size or height limits are specifically imposed on purely decorative holiday displays in residential zones; however, displays that obstruct traffic sight lines or public rights-of-way remain subject to city code. The Planning and Development Services Division (806-378-6290) interprets sign code provisions.
Displays constituting unpermitted commercial signs under Ch. 4-2 may result in a notice of violation and fines up to $500 per day until removed or permitted.
