Amarillo, TX Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Section 4-2-7 lists the signs exempt from Chapter 4-2's permit and fee requirements, and item P covers temporary garage sale signs directly: they must not exceed four square feet, may only be placed on private property, not the public right-of-way, a neighbor's yard, or a utility pole, and must be taken down within one day of the sale's end. Every exemption in Section 4-2-7 still requires compliance with the chapter's other standards, including the rule in Section 4-2-9(C)(1)(e) reserving public property for signs used by the City, the State, Potter County, Randall County, or the United States.

A garage sale sign left up longer than a day, exceeding four square feet, or placed in the right-of-way loses its exemption and becomes an unpermitted sign subject to removal. The exemption is narrower than the general sixty-day annual or limited temporary sign permits available under Section 4-2-11 for other advertising, which require a Building Official permit, a sixty-square-foot cap, and at least seventy-five feet of spacing from another temporary sign; garage sale signs skip that process entirely as long as they stay within the four-square-foot, private-property, one-day limits.

Because Amarillo spans both Potter and Randall counties, the same Section 4-2-7(P) exemption applies on either side of the county line, since it is a citywide sign-code rule rather than a county one.
