As the Christmas Capital of Texas, Grapevine is known for elaborate holiday displays. The city allows residential holiday lights, inflatables, and decorations between November 1 and January 15 without permits. Displays should not create traffic hazards, trespass light onto neighbors, or violate HOA rules. Commercial displays may need temporary sign permits.
Grapevine embraces its identity as the Christmas Capital of Texas and generally takes a permissive approach to residential holiday displays. Residents may install holiday lighting, illuminated figures, inflatables, and seasonal signs on their own property between November 1 and January 15 without a specific city permit. During this period, outdoor lighting is generally exempt from the quantitative foot-candle and cutoff standards that apply year-round, though common sense rules still apply: displays must not create glare that creates traffic hazards on adjacent streets, must not trespass substantial light into neighbors' living or sleeping areas, and must not generate noise that creates a nuisance. Inflatable displays, light projection systems, and yard arches are permitted if they remain on private property and do not extend into the public right-of-way. Temporary holiday banners and commercial displays at businesses may require a temporary sign permit depending on size and duration, and the Historic Township has supplemental standards to preserve downtown character. Displays that block sidewalks, obstruct sight lines at intersections, or drive significant event-style traffic may require additional coordination with police for traffic control. Displays must be removed by January 15 or follow HOA rules if earlier. Commercial event displays along Main Street and in venues around the city (e.g., Gaylord Texan, Christmas on Main) are coordinated with city special events.
