Unincorporated Yuba County's sign code bans inflatable signs and displays outright, in every zoning district and regardless of location, even though non-commercial holiday displays are otherwise exempt from standard sign permitting.

These county ordinances apply to unincorporated areas of Yuba County. Incorporated cities within the county may have their own rules that take precedence over county-level regulations.

Inflatable signs. Signage or displays that are inflatable are prohibited regardless of location.(3)Portable signs. Signs not permanently attached to the ground or other permanent structure or signs designed to be transported including, but not limited to, signs designed to be transported by means of wheels; signs made as A-frames or T-frames; menu and sandwich board signs except where expressly provided for in this Chapter (See "Temporary Signs" in Section 11.27.120). Signs attached to or painted on vehicles parked and visible from the public right-of-way, unless said vehicle is used in the normal day-to-day operations of the business identified on the sign.(4)Roof signs.a.Attached signs that extend above the top of roof or parapet (whichever is higher) of a building with a flat roof.b.Attached signs that extend above the deck line of a mansard roof.c.Signs on rooftop structures such as penthouse walls or mechanical enclosures.d.However, signs that do not extend above the deck line of a mansard roof, and that do not extend above the parapet (or the roofline if no parapet is present) of a flat roof are permitted subject to the standards of Section 11.27.080(2), Wall Signs.

Full Breakdown

The Development Code's sign chapter flatly prohibits inflatable signs and displays 'regardless of location' under Section 11.27.040(2), a ban that applies in every zoning district of unincorporated Yuba County. Separately, Section 11.27.030(8) exempts non-commercial decorative holiday displays from zoning clearance and sign-area counting, provided they come down within 45 days -- but that exemption only waives permitting steps, not the Chapter's outright prohibitions, since exempt signs must still comply with applicable provisions of the Chapter. Because 'sign' is defined broadly to cover objects and displays, an inflatable holiday decoration such as a giant snowman or Santa risks violating the inflatable-sign ban even though static holiday decorations are exempt.

Violations & Fines

Code enforcement can order removal of any inflatable sign or display; prohibited signs are subject to abatement as illegal signs under Chapter 11.27's removal and enforcement provisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put an inflatable Santa or snowman on my lawn in unincorporated Yuba County?
Static holiday decorations are exempt from sign permitting if removed within 45 days, but Section 11.27.040(2) separately bans inflatable signs and displays outright, so an inflatable lawn display carries real risk of a code violation.
Does the inflatable ban apply only to businesses?
No -- Section 11.27.040(2) prohibits inflatable signs or displays 'regardless of location,' and the Sign Chapter applies in all zoning districts of the county, residential included.
