Arlington Heights permits political signs on residential property with minimal restrictions consistent with First Amendment protections. Signs may not exceed 6 square feet in area per sign in residential districts. No permit is required for political signs. Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way or on Village property.
The Village of Arlington Heights regulates political signs as part of its general sign ordinance while respecting First Amendment protections for political speech. Political signs on residential property do not require a permit. Each sign may not exceed 6 square feet in area in residential zoning districts. There is no restriction on the number of political signs that may be displayed on private residential property. Signs must be located entirely on private property and may not be placed in the public right-of-way, including parkways, medians, utility poles, or Village property. Signs may not obstruct sight lines at intersections or driveways. The Village does not regulate the content of political signs. Signs may be displayed year-round and are not limited to election season. Illuminated political signs are subject to the same lighting restrictions as other residential signage. Political signs on commercial property may be subject to different size limits based on the sign ordinance provisions for the applicable zoning district. The Village's sign regulations have been crafted to be content-neutral consistent with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert.
Political signs placed in the public right-of-way may be removed by the Village without notice. Signs exceeding size limits may receive a notice of violation. There are no fines for first-time violations of political sign size limits in most cases; the Village typically requests voluntary compliance. Contact Code Enforcement at (847) 368-5200.
