North Carolina law lets you place political signs in the state highway right-of-way only from 30 days before early voting until 10 days after the election, with placement limits on height, size, and distance from pavement. On private property, city and county sign rules apply.
Political signs in the right-of-way of the state highway system are governed by North Carolina G.S. Β§ 136-32. Signs are allowed only during a set election window, must be at least three feet from the pavement edge, no higher than 42 inches, no larger than 864 square inches, and must not block motorist visibility; sign-placers must get permission from adjoining property owners. A city may adopt its own ordinance for streets it maintains within its limits. On private property in Fayetteville, the city's UDO sign standards apply, while unincorporated-county private-property signs follow the county ordinance. It is a Class 3 misdemeanor to steal or unlawfully remove a lawfully placed political sign.
Signs left in the right-of-way beyond the allowed window are deemed abandoned and may be removed. Unlawfully removing a lawful political sign is a Class 3 misdemeanor.
