Gainesville, FL Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

There's no separate 'political sign' category in Gainesville's sign code; campaign and cause signs are governed the same way as any other temporary sign, through the code's message-substitution clause. 4(A) lets the owner of any conforming sign put either a commercial or noncommercial message on it, so a yard sign that would otherwise advertise a business can instead carry a candidate's name or a ballot position without needing separate approval. 4(B): signs can't block the sight line of pedestrians or drivers, including within a corner's vision triangle, can't sit in or on the public right-of-way, can't block a door, window, or fire escape used for building exit, and can't use words like 'Stop,' 'Look,' or 'Danger' within ten feet of a right-of-way or 200 feet of a traffic signal.

5(A), a single political sign on single-family residential property is capped at 6 square feet in area, 4 feet in structure height, set back at least 10 feet from the side property line, and displayed for no more than 180 calendar days without needing a sign permit. Multi-family residential properties get up to six such signs at the same size and a taller 8-foot structure limit, and nonresidential properties get up to four signs, each as large as 32 square feet and up to 8 feet tall, at the same 10-foot side setback. Signs tied to a specific event, including an election, must come down within 10 calendar days after the event itself.
