Rockdale County, GA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Rockdale County Code § 230-17(d)(3) exempts signs placed inside a building or a totally enclosed area, including window signs, from the requirement to get a sign permit, but it expressly says window signs must still meet the dimensional limits set out in the sign table. That table, § 230-20, Table 20-1, item 8, caps window signs at 30 percent aggregate coverage of the window area per building elevation, and that percentage counts every permanent and temporary sign in the window together, not each sign separately.

Because window signs are exempt from permitting rather than exempt from regulation, they remain subject to enforcement and penalties under the sign chapter the same as a permitted ground or wall sign. The Planning and Development Department administers the sign chapter and can act against a business that exceeds the 30 percent threshold even though no permit application was ever filed. Properties inside the Salem Road Corridor Overlay follow a parallel rule in § 210-2(q)(3), which sets the identical 30 percent aggregate window-coverage cap for nonresidential buildings in that overlay, while residential subdivisions and multi-family properties there are held to a flat four-square-foot cap per window or wall sign instead.
