Somerville, MA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

15 defines a window sign as letters, numerals, or a logo applied directly to the inside of a window or door to identify a business, meant to be read at close range by pedestrians. Standard (b)(i) requires the sign to be applied directly to the inside of the window glass, at or above eye level, with a transparent background so the storefront still reads as glass rather than a solid panel. Standard (b)(ii) restricts content to business name, logo, hours of operation, and product types, stating flatly that 'additional information is prohibited,' which rules out pricing, phone numbers, or promotional copy.

The accompanying dimensional table caps total coverage at 20% of the window glass area, sets a 5-foot width and 3-foot height ceiling per sign, limits lettering to 18 inches tall, requires at least 5 feet of clearance above any sidewalk, and allows only one window sign per window. 3(a)(i)(f), so no special permit or design review is required beyond meeting these standards. These rules were adopted by Ord. 2024-14, effective November 26, 2024, replacing the prior sign ordinance.
