Tracy, CA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 10.08.4440 defines a window sign as any sign painted, printed, attached, glued, or otherwise affixed to the exterior side of a window. Two different standards then apply depending on whether the sign is temporary or permanent, both set out in section 10.08.4500. Under subsection (j)(7), temporary window signs are capped at twenty-five percent of the window area provided visibility into the building is maintained, meaning a business advertising a sale or promotion on its glass cannot block more than a quarter of the pane and must leave sightlines into the store intact. Under subsection (m), a business is limited to one permanent window sign not exceeding four square feet in area, a much tighter allowance meant for a fixed sign such as a decal or painted logo rather than rotating promotional messages.

Because window signs count as a distinct sign type under Article 35, they are evaluated separately from wall signs, monument signs, and other categories rather than being folded into a parcel's total sign area calculation under section 10.08.4480(b)(5). All permanent signs, including permanent window signs, must still meet the general construction, illumination, and location standards in section 10.08.4480, and any sign not expressly permitted by the article is prohibited outright under section 10.08.4490(j).
