Full Breakdown
Dallas County does not require a specific permit for solar panel installation on residential properties in unincorporated areas. The county does not have building code authority over single-family residential structures. TX Property Code Section 202.010 prohibits HOAs from banning solar energy devices (expanded in 2025 by HB 431 to include solar roof tiles). HOAs may require prior architectural approval but cannot unreasonably withhold it. Utility interconnection approval from the serving electric utility is required for grid-tied systems. Federal and state solar tax credits may apply.
