Bergenfield, NJ Solar Energy: Panel Permits (2026)

Bergenfield has no ordinance dedicated solely to solar panels; the permit path runs through Chapter 136, Construction Codes, Uniform. Section 136-1 establishes the Bergenfield Construction Code Department as the Borough's State Uniform Construction Code Enforcing Agency, led by a Construction Official with a Plumbing Subcode Official among the staff. Section 136-4C sets the plumbing subcode fee schedule, and Subsection C(2) lists active solar systems by name among the special devices charged a flat $80 fee, in the same category as grease traps, sewer pumps, gas service entrances and pool heaters.

That $80 fee is in addition to the Borough's basic minimum construction permit fee under § 136-4A, which is $60 for Use Group R-3 and R-5 structures such as single- and two-family homes, or $100 for every other use group, if the solar work is filed as its own permit rather than folded into a larger roofing or electrical job. 4, not as a general borough-wide zoning right.
